Steve Bradbury

Steve Bradbury paints two things: the coast and countryside of South Dublin, and the animals we are in the process of losing. He builds them up in layered oils and translucent glazes, and in a “burnt film” technique that leaves a place looking like a photograph left too long in the light — still there, but going.

He co-founded Teal House with Olena Kasian, and still teaches the Bubbles & Brushstrokes oil painting evenings in the gallery.

The work

Two collections sit side by side. The landscapes are South Dublin — coast roads, fields, light coming off the water — glazed up in layers so each one reads as a memory of a place rather than a record of it. The wildlife is the harder half: cheetahs, jaguars, deer, painted with the same fading technique for the same reason.

Together they make a quiet argument about what is disappearing while we are still looking at it.

Commissions

Steve is the one artist at Teal House who takes commissions. Most painters find the brief, the deadline and the back-and-forth a constraint. He likes it — and says the result is harder to make and better to live with.

People come to it when nothing on the wall quite lands: they want the particular stretch of coast, the particular dog, the particular light. You are involved from the first conversation to the last glaze.
